Module 3: Access to maternity services

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • identify groups that may not make full and timely use of maternity care and child health services
  • understand some of the barriers that may prevent migrant women from accessing maternity care and child health services
  • suggest some solutions that will help to overcome these barriers
  • understand who is eligible for free NHS maternity care
  • know what to do if a woman is not eligible for free NHS maternity care.

This module has five components.

1. Reflective Practice

‘It’s meaningless to talk about access to services: the services are there for everyone, and it’s not the fault of the service if some women don’t use it.’ Do you agree or disagree? Please say why.

2. Reflective Practice

Why do you think migrant women and women from Black and minority ethnic groups may book later for care and attend fewer appointments? List as many reasons as you can.
