Module 6: Intercultural communication

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Understand that conventions for body language, speech and politeness are culturally specific.
  • Describe some of the most significant aspects of non-verbal and verbal communication where gestures or practices have different meanings in different cultures.
  • Be aware of the diverse ways of expressing politeness and respect in different cultures, and how these may impact on mutual understanding and the care you give a woman.

This module has seven components.

1. Reflective Practice

In what ways do you think your body language could affect a client's perception of you and what you are saying to her?

2. Reflective Practice

Have you ever been in a situation, professionally or socially, where someone misjudged you or your intentions? How did you feel?

3. Reflective Practice

What are the challenges in trying to give an equitable service to someone who appears to take you for granted or does not appear to be polite to you?

4. Presentation

5. Practice example

A woman on the postnatal ward says to a midwife, 'Get me some tea.' The midwife is offended, says, 'Sorry, you will have to wait,' and walks away.
What might be going on for the woman?
How has the midwife responded?
How else could the midwife have dealt with the situation?

6. Reflective Practice

In what ways can you improve your own intercultural communication skills? List five things you could do this week.
