Module 7: Migration and maternal mental health

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Understand the additional stresses on migrant women that may precipitate mental health problems.
  • Identify the different ways in which women from different cultures may conceptualise and express mental distress, and the challenges this may present to the professional seeking to identify mental health needs.
  • Apply the NICE guideline on antenatal and postnatal mental health to migrant women, covering both identification and treatment.
  • Understand the additional mental health needs that asylum seekers, refugees, ‘refused’ asylum seekers and victims of trafficking may have.
